What is the ‘Treaty of Versailles’?
The
Treaty of Versailles was a significant peace treaty that brought World War I to
an end. It was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of
Versailles located in France. This was exactly five years after the
assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which led to the WWI.
For German, it imposed harsh penalties on Germany, the country that was seen as the main aggressor in the war. These penalties included substantial territorial losses, military restrictions, and heavy reparations payments. Germany lost territories in Europe and all of its overseas colonies, and its army was limited to 100,000 men with no submarines or aircraft.
There were also new Nation States.
The treaty led to the redrawing of the map of Europe. Several new countries
were created, such as Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia, while others,
like the Baltic states, gained independence.
There was another thing called League of Nations. It’s basically an international organization aimed at maintaining peace and preventing future wars. While the League of Nations was a precursor to the United Nations, it still failed to prevent the outbreak of World War II.
It
was also founded on 10 January 1920 by the Paris Peace Conference that ended
the First World War.
