Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is a great detective. He has many skills including; A master of disguise, strong, fast, and very introspective. For this part, I will be writing about him being very observant. The quote I will be exploring is:

“You see, but you do not observe replied Holmes

The quote “You see, but you do not observe” is a reply by Holmes to Watson. Where Holmes says to him that he only views something, never observes it. The average person would look for the most obvious things in a picture, and not the small details. An example of Holmes being observant is when Holmes was looking for the knees of a helper for Jabez Wilson in the Red-headed League.

“I am sure that you inquired your way merely in order that you might see him,” said Watson.

“Not him.” replied Holmes.

“What then?”

“The knees of his trousers.”

During the Red-headed league, Holmes is trying to inquire about Jazeb Wilson helper. Holme’s doesn’t mainly want to talk to him, but rather to see his knees. This is what Holmes meant by “You see, but you do not observe”. If Watson / a regular person had talked to this man he was trying to inquire, he would probably just have a regular chat. While Holmes is trying to find small details like the knees of his trousers to see if his deduction was correct. His deduction was that if this person was digging a tunnel to the bank. If he was digging a tunnel, the knees of his trousers would be ruined and dirty. Holmes' deduction was correct.

A master of Disguise

Sherlock Holmes is also a master of disguise. Even his best friend, Watson couldn't recognise him when he had dressed up in a disguise. The quote that shows this is:

"As I was surprised to my friends master in disguise, I had to look three times to make sure that it was him." Watson said in his mind

When Holmes walked out of the dress room, he had changed his accent as well. His disguise was so good, it took Watson 3 looks to make sure that it was really him. Holmes disguises himself so that he can gather information from other people.

In the story, Scandal in Bohemia, he dressed up as a taxi worker and walked up to the other taxi workers. He talked to them and gained their respect and trust. He then was able to gather information and walk away.
