Yuantari – Monday ( Bahasa Indonesia ) 20/3/2023

Today I will be learning about Direct Speech:

Direct and Indirect Speech:

When writers write about phrases or sentences a source has said, they can use either direct speech or indirect speech. Direct speech is used to repeat what someone else has said, and indirect speech is used to report on what someone else has said.

The following sections cover the topic such as direct and indirect speed, direct speech examples, and reported speech examples.

What is Direct Speech?

Direct speech, is sometimes called quoted speech, is the speed that is repeated verbatim or quoted from the original source. Direct speech can always be placed inside quotations. Direct speech can be a statement, a question, or a request.

Examples of Direct Speech

1.Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

2. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

Both these examples are examples of direct speech. The sentences are placed between two quotations.

What Is Indirect Speech?

Indirect speech, also referred to as reported speech, is the interpretation or modification of the words of the original source. Since indirect speech reports on the words of another source, it cannot be a question; it is always a statement. Moreover, there are no quotation marks around an indirect statement.

From the Keberanian Emas Story:

Direct sentence

The giant shouted, "You fool! How dare you hurt me! Will I catch and eat you up, stupid girl!"

Indirect Sentence

The giant didn't expect Gold to dare to hurt him. I threaten to catching and eating Emas.

Direct sentence

Mother said, "Thank you, Master Hermit!"

Indirect Sentence

Mother says thanks to hermit.

The Story in English:

There was a giant who was hunting for a girl named "Emas".

The mother wanted Emas to run away, so she went to a hermit which gave her 4 bags of spells which will help Emas to trap the giant. One day, it was time for Emas to go.

The Mother said you have to go, the giant is looking for you. She gives the spells to Emas and then she hugged and started running away.

Once then she threw the first object down. It created vines all over him, but he broke out of it. She soon threw the second one which made him stuck inside of bamboos. She was able to get far until he catched up, so then she threw the third object which created a river with a massive tidal wave. She was nearly back home so she threw the last one at the giant which made him sink down underground.

Once then she got back home and hugged her mom that she was able to make it back alive. Now because of her courage and bravery, she has many friends and the success spreaded around the whole village.

The characteristics of direct sentences are using quotation marks (“”) at the beginning of the sentence and in quotation marks ("") at the end of the sentence.

Assignment:

Now change the following direct sentences into indirect sentences direct:

1. Emas said, "Don't be sad, Mother. We can definitely find a way to defeat the giant."

Emas doesn’t want her mother to be sad. She can definitely find a way to defeat the giant.

2. The giant shouted, "Come here, I can't wait to eat you!"

3. Emas replied, "Just try it, I'm not afraid!"

4. Emas Friends asked, "Emas, do you want to come pick flowers in the fields Later?"

Emas friends wants her to come with them to pick up some flowers in the field later.

5. The hermit advised, "Use these four objects to defeat giant. But remember, Emas must believe and have courage."

The hermit gives four objects which are used to defeat the giant. But Emas must believe and have courage to defeat it.

Homework / Assignment:

Create a story:

The Beginning:                                                                                                                                     Jerry dream is to become a race car driver and draws alot of race cars in his spare time. Every time he goes to school, his friends who are Bob, George, and Tom, show their drawings of their race cars that they want in the future too. As time go by, Jerry and his friends graduated elementary school, middle school, high school, and now they were in college with still the same passion of becoming a race driver. Now what they had to do was to save up for a car. Soon later, they were all able to get jobs and now it was time to save up.

Creating A Game:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    One day, George was just searching  through online finding stuff to do, and he saw people making thousands from games, he thought “Hey, Jerry how about we make a game. I’ve been seeing people making thousands online?” Jerry thought it was a great idea he replied back “That sounds wonderful I’ll ask the others about it!”, he soon asked his Bob and Tom and they didn’t like it. They didn’t believed that something like the internet would be able to make you thousands. So, then Jerry and George had to do it themselves. So, they decided to learn coding and designing the game on the spare time. Although it took months, the game was finally done and they both were very proud of it, they soon posted it online on many forums and soon they published it on the game store called Steam. It wasn’t gaining much tractions and Bob and Tom had very little hope for it, while George and Jerry were confident. Jerry had an idea to boost the game attractions, “What if we let someone famous try to promote the game?”, George Responded back, “Wouldn’t that cost a lot of money though?”, Jerry said back, “How about we set a budget of 250$?”, George thought about it, but Jerry was able to convince George into doing it to prove Bob and Tom wrong and if they believed the internet could make you thousands, they would surely help out the game. The next day, Jerry and George got straight to searching for a Game tester which reviews games that people made which fit inside their budget. Soon, they were able to find one and bribe them and the game tester accepted. The next week, the Game tester published the video about reviewing their game and the outcome was a positive response. The game started getting traction and they saw the revenue it was creating. In just a single day of the video getting posted they were able to make their money back! Once then Jerry instantly showed Bob and Tom their game success and revenue. They were sorry about being wrong that you couldn’t make any money, but Jerry forgave them. Tom and Bob said at the same time, “Could we help out on the game?”, Jerry was excited that their plan succeeded and said back, “Of course you can help out!”. Bob and Tom soon learned about the tutorials or coding and designing. Now that we have double the amount of people working on the game, the updates can be twice as better!

Buying their cars:                                                                                                                             After just a few weeks the revenue amount was more than the amount they made from their jobs! They all were finally able to afford the car that they wanted! Although it wasn’t luxury, it sure did look good. With their spare money, they were able to renew the painting job and new tires. Soon later they all tried out for a driving license, and they all passed! Now that all of them have a driving license and a car they all thought that now they could go and try to sign up to become a racer, but Jerry said “No, we need more experience about driving first before we try to sign up to become a racer.” The others thought about it and finally agreed on it. After that Jerry found a Formula track which was used for training and the entry fee was not that expensive. So, they all got into their cars and drove over there. Soon they arrived and paid for the entry fee and drove their cars in and started racing. Bob said “Hmm, are we the only ones here?” George said back “Well if so then we have more space for training!”. They trained from 3pm to 6pm and it was time for them to go back home. They all had so much fun!

Signing up:

The next few months they updated their games and trained at the track. Once then they finally thought they were eligible to become a Formula driver. It was 10:30 AM When they found out that there was a few spots left in one of the Formula clubs which starts at 12:30 AM. So, they all quickly arrived there and signed up. All of the contestants were greeted by a tour inside of the Formula V.I.P area and the garage of where the Formulas are stored and played. And before they start the test, the guide told everyone the rules and the basics of Formula, he showed many examples of what to do and what not to do. Everyone understood the rules and basics. Jerry said wow there’s a lot of people here, George responded back, “Do you mean 16?”. It was nearing up 12:30 AM and everyone was getting into their suits and the people were preparing the Formula cars. Jerry and his friends went up to each other because of Tom and he said “This race is everything to us right?” They all said Yes, “So in this race we are currently all frenemies alright?” He smirked and they all said Alright. Once everything was prepared it was just 3 minutes before starting so everyone was inside of their Formula cars.

Racing:

It was 12:30 AM and now it was time to start the race. The referee did his count down, “3, 2, 1, GO!”. And the race was ON! They were all going super-fast, but Jerry and Bob sadly had a bad start. George and Tom were tying up that 2nd place till the contestants behind them catched up, George and Tom were now 3rd and 4th with Jerry and Bob were catching up fast from becoming last in 16th and 15th to Bob catching up to 10th and Jerry catching up to 8th. The person in first place just finished their first lap followed up by the other contestants and George in 3rd. Currently George is 3rd, Tom is 5th,  Jerry is 7th, and Bob is 8th. Jerry and his friends tried catching up, but unfortunately for lap 2 they positions didn’t change. The third lap for them was even worse of George becoming 5th, Tom becoming 6th, Bob becoming 10th, and Jerry becoming 13rd . There was only 2 more laps so they had to clutch this, with Jerry going as fast as he can and risking it all passing through all of the contestants, he suddenly became 2nd and his friends Tom became 4th, Bob became 6th, and George became 7th. And the 4th lap was done, and this was the final lap. The contestant versus Jerry. They both got really clean turns and great speed.

The Results:

Jerry tried and tried and finally at the end sadly Jerry became Second. Sadly, Jerry didn’t get the role. The other contestant soon became on the team and said to him, “Better luck next time”. The manager of the club said, “Hey you all come here, although you guys didn’t make it to the team there will always be a next time opportunity, because next month there will be another team tryouts. Goodluck everyone for next month! It will start here exactly next month and same time.” They all celebrated and ate for lunch. Jerry and his friends sat on the same table and had a chat. They talked about how much fun it was and even though they didn’t get on the team they would still have another chance. They talked about how good each of them performed. Now it was time to get back home, they talked to each other the way back home and laughed.
